Some American Pit Bull Terriers can be abandoned by their owners. This happens due to a number of reasons. Usually, it has nothing to do with the dog breed. Owners do sometimes surrender their dogs either because their life style has changed or they can no longer care for the pet.
Rescue organizations are dedicated to finding stray dogs or abandoned dogs, placing them in shelters and trying to re-home these animals. If you have found an American Pit Bull Terrier that needs assistance, you are welcome to contact the rescue organization in your neighborhood.
Some shelters tend to have policies against adopting American Pit Bull Terriers. These policies are not surprising taking into consideration the undermined reputation of the breed. The American Pit Bull Terrier is not a dog for everyone. No dog breed is suitable for everybody. Some rescue organizations temperament test American Pit Bull Terriers in order to determine if they can be adopted, trained and cared for. Potential adopters should also be screened to make sure they are capable of taking the challenge. American Pit Bull Terriers should be evaluated on an individual basis, as no dog should be written off simply because the breed has a bad reputation.
