American Pit Bull Terriers - History
American Pit Bull Terriers are closely connected with the history of pit fighting. The precise origin of the APBT is not known. The breed's roots can be traced back to the 18th century. This was the time when the cruel sport of bull baiting was extremely popular. In 1835, bull baiting was finally outlawed in England. However, no less cruel and spectacular, dog fighting replaced it. The practice of bringing the dogs together to fight in a pit got so popular that almost every pub and inn had a fighting pit.

American Pit Bull Terriers are short-coated dogs. Therefore they need no extra grooming besides regular brushing and bathing only when necessary. However, what is crucial in the APBT upkeep is proper training. These are very strong-minded dogs that require early socialization and obedience training in order to make them reliable friends and companions. The American Pit Bull Terrier is not the right breed for mild and timid owners. Firm training without physical punishment will lead to better results, as American Pit Bull Terriers should learn to respect their owners.
