Pitbull Terrier

The Pitbull Terrier looks very impressive for its size. This breed is characterized by great power and willingness to work and please the owner. Pitbull Terriers make excellent guard dogs. They are determined and courageous in everything that concerns protecting the owner and the property. A well-trained Pitbull Terrier is intelligent enough to protect the family only when needed. When there is no real danger, these fierce-looking dogs are friendly and easy-going.

This breed is much misunderstood nowadays. Many people consider these dogs vicious and dangerous. It’s far from the truth, but still some cases of unprovoked aggression occur in these dogs. In such cases, it’s the owner who is to blame, but not the dog. A temperament of any dog depends much on the owner’s knowledge and experience in training as well as on the pedigree of the puppy and its first few weeks at the breeder’s kennel.

A bad reputation of the Pitbull Terrier is created by irresponsible breeders and owners who encourage aggression in their dogs for some purposes. Proper breeding, early socialization and firm obedience training make even a strong and large dog reliable. These dogs discriminate cats and dogs from humans and will never show aggression to humans. The breed standard considers aggression to humans and other dogs as a fault in this breed. Aggressive dogs cannot be bred, sold or surrendered to rescues.

The Pitbull Terrier is suited for almost any activity a canine can do. These strong and courageous dogs do best in activities that test their ability to endure pain and exhaustion. Although dog fights were outlawed many years ago, the strength and determination of these dogs can be used in many sports: weight pulling, big game hunting, and others. Purebred Pitbull Terriers do well in obedience, conformation and agility.

This breed is easy to keep in terms of grooming and care. A short coat of the Pitbull Terrier needs no complicated grooming. Occasional brushing and bathing will do to keep it in good condition. Being hardy and healthy, this breed requires minimal vet care besides regular vaccinations. It’s not recommended to keep a dog of this breed indoors. Though Pitbull Terriers are quiet and obedient when needed, they should have an outlet to their energy. The Pitbull Terrier will be happy if allowed to play in the yard and let indoors for the night.
